Sexuality and Infertility, Part 1: Emotional Intimacy

Emotional intimacy:  Infertile couples sometimes have difficulty maintaining a healthy sexual relationship.

This blog series will begin to address some of the issues which arise.

Women require emotional intimacy, starting with a positive relationship with words of reassurance and warmth. The senses are very pivotal in the sexual response of women. Touch is number one. Nonsexual touching is the best way to initiate touching. A back rub is an example of this. Touching sends signals directly to the spinal cord which creates genital arousal response. Auditory stimuli such as certain types of music, which are familiar and considered to be romantic may act as sexual cues as well.

We always hope that our patients can maintain a healthy sexual relationship despite the scheduled intercourse and stress they feel about their situation.

If you and your partner are struggling with sexual dysfunction due to infertility, this Fact Sheet from the Patient Education Website of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine may be helpful.

Stay tuned for Part 2 about the tie between the sense of smell and sexuality.
